  18. <p>     Amid the hype surrounding the forthcoming Tom Cruise $60
  19. million race-car epic Days of Thunder is the widely reported
  20. claim that the film left Hollywood preview audiences gaga with
  21. delight. In fact, some early responses were so grumbly or
  22. apathetic that the producers decided to take the star and his
  23. car back to the speedway at Daytona to reshoot the ending. Two
  24. more racing shots were added. Such tinkering with big-ticket
  25. productions is not so unusual in these days of compulsive
  26. market research, but the timing for this one was unusual: the
  27. new ending was filmed just three weeks before this Wednesday's
  28. opening, making the movie a green-flag contender for
  29. Hollywood's down-to-the-wire award.
